Nairobi A Place To Be.

Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya and East Africa's most populous city (3.5 million). Nairobi was founded in 1899 as a railway stop en route to Mombasa. Within a decade it grew to become the capital of British East Africa and became Kenya's capital after independence in 1963. Nairobi is a major business hub and many Aid agencies headquarter here as well. Nairobi has a modern city center, some beautiful suburbs, as well as Africa's largest slum . The city is built on a plateau and it stays pleasantly cool year round. Both English and Kiswahili are widely spoken.

Mount Kenya

The peak of Mt. Kenya

Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro and Most of the peaks,Batian,Nelion,Lenana on Mount Kenya have been summited.Mount Kenya offers a wealth of excellent and diverse climbing possibilities on rock, snow and ice.

The highest peak that can be ascended without rock climbing is Point Lenana, 4,985 metres which requires a scramble or a walk. The other two(Batian 5,199m,Nelion 5,188m) are for technical climbers. To combine this ascent with a circumnavigation of the main peaks, Nelion and Batian  requires at least an extra day.

Giraffe

Records describes them as magnificent in appearance, bizarre in form, unique in gait, colossal in height and inoffensive in character.Giraffes sometimes were sent as diplomatic gifts to other countries;one of the earliest records tells of giraffe going from 'Melinda' presumably Malindi in Kenya to china in 1415. The neck is so long that it must spread its front legs apart for its head to reach down to drink.Giraffes  and okapi walks moving both legs on one side forward at the time.

Giraffes necking:Males do this when fighting, sometimes the blows can get strong that their necks entwine

They can reach a speed of 35miles an hour. They are mostly found in arid and dry-savanna zones south of the Sahara, wherever trees occur.Although a quiet animal, they are not mute. They bellow, grunt bray in distress moan and emit short flute like notes. They often alert other animals in the park due to their acute sense of hearing and sight. They mostly feed on acacia trees. They feed 16 to 20 hours a day. Mother giraffes leaves their young ones in nursery while they feed. They are not territorial, the males are hierarchical and sometimes spar by standing side by side and lowering and swinging their heads at one another. Their young ones grows really fast, like an inch a day, they are 6 foot high when born.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest mountain, and despite peaking at over 5,000m it still seems to sit well and truly in Mount Kilimanjaros’, shadow, across the border in Tanzania. What it lacks in height however it more than makes up for in beauty.
 http://www.animalorphanagekenya.org/site/wp-content/uploads/BIG-mount-kenya-white-zebra-7.jpg
Jagged snow-capped peaks, sweeping glacial valleys and diverse vegetation make climbing Mount Kenya a strong contender for Africa’s greatest trek. One of the many highlights is its unique Afro-Alpine zone with its Dr Seuss-like landscape of Giant Lobelias and Senecios.

Nairobi Excersion

Nairobi has many parks and open spaces throughout the city. Much of the city has dense tree-cover and plenty of green spaces. The most famous park in Nairobi is Uhuru Park. The park borders the central business district and the neighborhood Upper Hill. Uhuru (Freedom in Swahili language) Park is a centre for outdoor speeches, services, and rallies. The park was to be built-over by former President Daniel Arap Moi, who wanted the 62-storey headquarters of his party, the Kenya African National Union, situated in the park. However, the park was saved following a campaign by Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai.
Central Park is adjacent to Uhuru Park, and includes a memorial for Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya. Other notable open spaces include Jeevanjee Gardens, City Park, 7 August Memorial Park, and Nairobi Arboretum.

Bird Watching

Birdwatching in Kenya
East Africa is one of the richest bird areas in the world. With a wealth of different habitats, often close to each other, it's quite easy to spot over 100 species during your Bird watching adventure in Kenya.Although many of the birds are brightly colored and exotic looking, they are generally quite easily recognized; within a day or two you will be identifying the various species with ease! Their main habitats include water, open plains, woodlands and farmlands. Arriving into the big city airports, frequently the first birds spotted are the urban and farmland dwellers, such as the Wagtails and Weaver birds, with their huge nest colonies.

On or near water, you will find bright pink Flamingos, iridescent Kingfishers, Plovers, Herons, Storks, Geese, Cranes, Jacanas and of course the magnificent African Fish Eagle. In certain places along the coast there are breeding pairs of Osprey as well.
The open savannah plains, where the majority of the big safaris take place, offer excellent bird watching opportunities for some unusual ground dwellers. The Ground Hornbill, at nearly 110 cm. tall is one of the largest and most visible; the tall Secretary bird is also spotted often. Eagles, vultures, and Ostrich, the largest bird on earth, are also spotted frequently.
The smaller plains birds, such as the Ox-peckers, snowy white Egrets, brilliant Sunbirds and bustards are also found in abundance; you can't miss seeing birds on any game drive!
Near the woodlands, you'll find yet more species with starlings of every color, Bee-eaters, Drongos, Hornbills, Shrikes, the beautiful Lilac-breasted Roller, Barbets and Guinea Fowl. Visit www.africangametrek.com

On this day,we pick you up from your hotel or at agreed pick up point to begin our journey to the world`s famous Masai Mara. This is around 7:30am in the morning and the city is crazy with traffic jam, good thing though, the traffic only holds those entering into the city.

There is a beautiful sunrise from the western horizon, these is among some of the beauties Kenya is blessed to have. The equator transects this land into halves. We head towards the central Kenya and bordering the Great Rift valley, here we have stop overs at the view point to see the valley from the top.

The visibility is panoramic and the beauty is just amazing. Also at this view point the are several curio shops that sells souvenirs to visitors...if  you love to take something back with you and you have a chance to taste Kenya`s authentic coffee or tea before we proceed to Masai Mara.

After about half an hour break we proceed again with our journey,en-route,you will be able to see the culture around, the lifestyle, and the indigenous settlements. There are large tracts of green wheat and maize plantations along the way. There are beautiful man-made and natural forest that are habitats to some wild animals like baboons, monkeys and several small animals.

We get into the valley and here we can easily spot gnus and zebras. The land is semi arid with several scattered acacia and cactus trees. Also we can spot the Maasai morans who are mainly the native community that stays around here and that are still preserving and practicing their culture. They are nomads and move most of the time in search of pasture for their livestock.

Here we are,at the gates of the Park, several animals..from small to huge.Read more...

Kenyans

Kenyans love to party, and the music style known as Benga is the contemporary dance music that rules. It originated among the Luo people of western Kenya and became popular in the area in the 1950s.
Now in the late 1900, early 2000 Kenya's hip hop scene has really taken off. Only a few years ago, it was unthinkable for a Kenyan to earn any money, let alone earn a living from the trade. Well brace yourself, Kenya’s hip hop scene is among the most vibrant in Africa....and with a rapid rise in its popularity, both in Kenya and worldwide, this hip hop scene will only get better.
The national dish of Kenya is a cornmeal mush called Ugali. It is cornmeal cooked with water to a thick consistency and poured out onto a board or plate for everyone to eat from. Green vegetables are important to the African diet. In Kenya, collard greens are both cheap and popular. The dish sukuma wiki literally translates to "stretch the week." True Swahili cuisine is best found at the coast.
Beer drinkers are well supplied in this country. Kenyans love their beer almost as much as their dancing and there's a thriving local brewing industry.
